TOPIC: THE RECHABITE GENERATION
BIBLE READING:
JEREMIAH 35:1-8, 18-19
KEY VERSE:
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever. Jeremiah 35:19
MEDITATION:
Jonadab the son of Rechab, was a man of great faith in Jehovah even though they were not of the tribe of Israel, they were descendants of Abraham, the Midianites (Genesis 25:2). They were Kenites of Midian who accompanied the children of Israel into Canaan (Judges 1:16). Though not an Israelite, Jonadab had great faith in the God of Israel. For instance, he joined Jehu in the fight to rout Baal worship and idolatry from Israel (2 Kings 10:15-28). Jonadab followed the path of the fear of God and taught his children to live a simple life of self-denial, which they obeyed and were blessed by God. “Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever " (Jeremiah 35:19).
In keeping their fore father’s instructions, children of Rechab refused to drink wine that was offered to them by prophet Jeremiah. They would rather obey their grandparent's command than being persuaded by any ‘spiritual giant.’ They were true model of Proverbs 22:6 – trained and never departed from the training they received. Unfortunately, many parents no longer give quality time and training to their children because of confused priorities and pursuits.
Like the Rechabite generation, parents must be intentional in communicating and living the word of God as a legacy that the children will not depart from.
What legacy are you leaving for your children?
PRAYER:
Oh God, help our parents to raise godly children like the Rechabite generation.
