TOPIC: THE COMFORT ZONE SYNDROME

BIBLE READING:

1 Kings 19:9-18

MEDITATION:

Many of us get so accustomed to some routine that have worked for us over time – our comfort zone. Some of these routines may be okay, but sometimes we stand the risk of missing vital divine help or support, except, we are sensitive enough to be ready to get out of our familiar terrain.

Elijah was a great prophet feared and revered by Kings and their armies in Israel. Elijah was known to be man of fire! He demonstrated this at the Baal's contest – 1 Kings 18:36-39. He was used to God manifesting his power through fire each time. So, he must have concluded, if it was not fire, it may not be God. In our bible reading today, God decided to teach Elijah a lesson of getting off his routine experience with God. While Elijah was running away from Jezebel, he went to hide in a cave after eating an angelic meal. He whined and complained to God he was the only prophet left in Israel. God told him to go stand on a mount, and the Lord would pass by – vv. 9-10.

First, a strong wind raged, there was no voice from God; next was an earthquake, still no voice; third was fire which he was used to, still no voice. Finally, a still small voice came forth. Elijah heard the voice. – vv. 11-13. God then gave him instructions on what to do.

Like many of us, Elijah almost missed God because he was used to one particular way He had seen God in action. Don't we behave like Elijah sometimes? We depend on events and happenings we are used to in defining God's way of manifesting His power or glory.

Time to quit our stereotyped familiar territories on the ways God manifests His power and glory.
