TOPIC: STRIVE LAWFULLY
TEXT: 2 TIMOTHY 2:1-5
Key Verse: "And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully" (2 Timothy 2:5).
Every game has rules, there are things that the players must not do to avoid being removed. In the game of soccer and handball, dangerous tackles, assaults and other violations of the rules will usually attract a 'yellow' or 'red' card depending on the seriousness of the offence committed on the field of play. The athletes also must respect rules of the game to avoid disqualification.
In sports generally, rules are supreme. There are many instances where top rated sports men/women were disqualified from taking part in world competitions because they broke the rules. There is generally a high level of discipline in sports competition.
As believers, we are running in a race called the heavenly race. The race to heaven has its rules too. These rules are laid down by the Almighty God Himself in His word. The starting point of our race is salvation by faith in the Lord Jesus who died to save and redeem us from sin.
Our heavenly race is a long-distance one that requires consistency in holiness of heart and obedience to the word of God till we get to the end. It is not a race you run looking here and there, or being carried away by the cheering noise or the attractions of the things of the world.
You must run the race patiently, following Jesus with full focus, knowing that an incorruptible crown awaits you at the end of the race.
Prayer: Lord, help me to live by Your word, and give me the grace to finish well at the end of my journey.
